Open Cell 5mm ⭐ Best Overall

Omer Blackstone 5mm

Omer · Available in 3mm, 5mm & 7mm · Italy

★★★★★ 9.7/10

The Omer Blackstone earns the top spot by excelling in every category that matters to a freediver: the open-cell Superstretch neoprene moulds to your body like a second skin, the thermal retention at depth is exceptional, and the black-on-black camo pattern is subtly effective in low-visibility water. The two-piece design — long-john bottoms with a jacket — allows independent adjustment and reduces restriction during duck-dives. Our testers rated the flexibility the highest of any suit in this class. If budget isn't the primary concern, start here.

Open Cell 5mm Best Camo Pattern

Salvimar N.A.T. 5mm

Salvimar · 3mm, 5mm & 7mm · Italy

★★★★★9.4/10

Salvimar's N.A.T. (Natural Aquatic Technology) is built around one of the most effective underwater camo prints on the market — a photorealistic seabed pattern that genuinely breaks up your silhouette against sandy and rocky bottoms. The open-cell Elaskin neoprene is soft, stretchy, and glued-and-blind-stitched throughout. Two-piece construction with smooth-skin exterior panels on the chest and forearms to reduce drag. An outstanding choice for spearos hunting in clear, sandy-bottom environments.

Open Cell 5mm Best Stitching

Beuchat Espadon Elite 5mm

Beuchat · 3mm & 5mm · France

★★★★★9.1/10

Beuchat's Espadon Elite is French spearfishing engineering at its finest. The suit features a full-length YKK zip on the jacket for easy donning (unusual in open-cell suits, and much appreciated after a long surface interval in a swell), glued-and-blind-stitched seams throughout, and one of the most flattering cuts in the category. The Elaskin neoprene is exceptionally warm for its thickness. A suit that impresses the moment you put it on.

Open Cell 3mm Best Tropical Pick

Pathos Camo 3mm

Pathos · 1.5mm, 3mm & 5mm · Greece

★★★★½8.9/10

The Pathos Camo 3mm is the go-to for warm-water and tropical spearfishing. Its lightweight, highly stretchy construction allows unrestricted arm movement during a shot, and the camo pattern — a detailed reef-tone print — blends well against coral and rubble. At 3mm it manages to stay comfortable in 24°C+ water without overheating, while still providing enough thermal protection for extended surface intervals. The best tropical wetsuit on our list by a clear margin.

5
Closed Cell 5mm Best for Beginners

Cressi Tracina 5mm

Cressi · 2.5mm, 5mm & 7mm · Italy

★★★★½8.7/10

Cressi's Tracina is the smartest entry into spearfishing wetsuits — a closed-cell suit that is far easier to don than open-cell alternatives (no lubricant required), washes easily, and holds up to beginner handling without tearing. The 5mm limestone neoprene is warmer than the spec suggests, the camo is a competent reef pattern, and the reinforced knee and elbow panels add real longevity. If you're new to freediving and not ready to commit to an open-cell suit, this is the answer.

Open Cell 3mm Best USA-Made

Riffe Neutrals Camo 3mm

Riffe International · 3mm & 5mm · Made in USA

★★★★½8.5/10

Riffe's Neutrals Camo is one of the few premium spearfishing wetsuits made in the United States, and it carries the same craftsmanship philosophy as their wooden spearguns. The Neutrals camo pattern — earthy greens, browns, and greys — is designed specifically for kelp and open-reef environments common to the California coast. Open-cell interior for a skin-tight, warm seal. Excellent longevity and Riffe's customer service is exceptional when you need repairs or sizing advice.

7
Open Cell 7mm Best Cold Water

Mares Pure Instinct 7mm

Mares · 5mm & 7mm · Italy

★★★★8.3/10

The Mares Pure Instinct 7mm is built for cold-water spearfishing in conditions where a thinner suit would end your dive early. The high-density limestone neoprene retains warmth impressively even after multiple dives, and the ultra-stretch Ultraspan panels at the armpits and across the lower back keep restriction minimal for a 7mm. The hooded jacket design with built-in bib prevents flushing around the neck — essential in sub-14°C water. The best 7mm on our list.

Open Cell 5mm Best Value Premium

Spearo by Adreno 5mm

Adreno Spearfishing · 3mm & 5mm · Australia

★★★★8.1/10

Adreno's own-brand Spearo suit punches well above its price, offering open-cell construction, glued-and-blind-stitched seams, and a quality reef camo print at a price that undercuts the European competition by a significant margin. It lacks the ultra-premium feel of the Omer or Salvimar, but for a diver who wants a proper open-cell suit without the European price tag, this is the most sensible buy on the list. Excellent sizing options including custom sizing at modest extra cost.

9
Closed Cell 3mm Best Budget Warm Water

JBL Water Master 3mm

JBL · 3mm & 5mm · USA

★★★★7.8/10

JBL applies the same "legendary durability, accessible price" philosophy to wetsuits that made their spearguns a beginner staple. The Water Master 3mm is a no-fuss, closed-cell suit that's easy to care for, holds its colour after months of saltwater exposure, and is robust enough to survive the rocky entry and exit points that tear apart thinner suits. Not a performance wetsuit, but it's honest, functional, and leaves room in the budget for a quality gun.

10
Closed Cell 3mm Best Under $100

Tilos Nalu Camo 3mm

Tilos · 3mm · USA

★★★½7.5/10

The Tilos Nalu Camo earns its spot as the list's most affordable entry — a legitimate spearfishing wetsuit under $100 that won't embarrass you in the water. The Yamamoto limestone neoprene is a genuine surprise at this price point, providing better warmth and stretch than the budget tag suggests. Stitching quality is adequate rather than impressive, but for a first wetsuit or an occasional-use backup, this is genuinely good value. Don't expect it to last five seasons, but it'll see you right for two.

Spearfishing Wetsuit Buying Guide

🌡️

Choosing Thickness

1–2mm for tropical water above 26°C. 3mm for 22–26°C. 5mm for 16–22°C. 7mm for cold water below 16°C. When in doubt, go thicker — you can always unzip a jacket, but you can't add warmth you don't have.

🔓

Open Cell vs Closed Cell

Open-cell suits seal directly against your skin for superior warmth and flexibility — but require lubricant (conditioner or spit) to don and tear more easily. Closed-cell suits are tougher, easier to put on, and better for beginners.

🎨

Camo Pattern Matters

Match your camo to your environment. Sandy-bottom patterns (blue-grey-brown) work in open sand and rock. Green-brown kelp patterns suit temperate reef. Dark/black suits are best in blue water where silhouette matters more than pattern.

✂️

One-Piece vs Two-Piece

Two-piece suits (long-john bottoms + hooded jacket) are the serious diver's choice — they provide a double layer over the core for warmth and allow the jacket to be removed between dives. One-piece suits are simpler and better for beginners.

🧵

Seam Construction

Glued-and-blind-stitched (GBS) seams are the standard for quality spearfishing suits — thread never penetrates the neoprene, so water can't flush through. Flatlock stitching is cheaper but allows water entry and is best avoided in suits above 3mm.

📐

Fit & Sizing

A spearfishing wetsuit should feel uncomfortably tight dry — it will relax slightly when wet. Loose suits flush cold water constantly and dramatically reduce thermal performance. Always size down if between sizes, and consider custom sizing for an exact fit.
